Lobster claw leg.

چکیده
His right leg was shorter than the left and ended in a conical stump. The foot had a well developed big toe and rudimentary second toe, and was located halfway up the lateral aspect ofthe leg (Fig. 1). The lateral three toes were absent. He could grasp the examiner’s two fingers firmly with this clawlike malformation and pick up a rubber ball 4 cm in diameter. His hips, femora, knees, left leg and foot were normal. He could crawl on hands and knees and hop with support on the left leg. Radiographs showed complete absence of the right fibula (Fig. 2). The difference in tibial lengths was 5 cm. The femora, knees, left tibia and foot showed no abnormality. The lateral three rays of the right foot were absent. The foot was amputated. There were well developed flexor hallucis longus and extensor hallucis longus tendons. A cartilaginous fibular anlage 3 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter was also excised. Five weeks after operation the boy walked well, unaided, using a patellar tendon bearing prosthesis. Discussion. Congenital absence of the fibula is a rare anomaly of obscure pathogenesis in which complete or partial absence of the fibula is associated with antero-

Electromyographic analysis of goal-directed grasping behavior in the American lobster.
Animals spontaneously initiate goal-directed behavior including foraging action based on their appetitive motivation. The American lobster Homarus americanus exhibits grasping behavior with its crusher claw as feeding behavior that can be initiated after appropriate operant conditioning. In order to quantitatively characterize the goal-directed grasping behavior with a time resolution fine enou...
متن کاملSpectrophotometric Studies of Penetration of Dyes
Spectrophotometric measurements show that the non-medullated nerve of a lobster claw is capable of absorbing methylene blue, azure B, or acid fuchsin dissolved in sea water but this does not necessarily imply that the dyes penetrate into the interior of the nerve.
متن کاملStudies of Nerve Proteins. Isolation and Physicochemical Characterization of a Protein from Lobster Nerve
1. A procedure is described by which several protein constituents may be obtained from extracts of lobster claw nerves. One of these fractions, designated fraction A, representing 10 per cent of the total non-dialyzable material of the extracts, has been obtained in relatively (85 per cent) pure form. 2. This component has been characterized with respect to its physicochemical properties, parti...
متن کاملMyofibrillar gene expression in differentiating lobster claw muscles.
Lobster claw muscles undergo a process of fiber switching during development, where isomorphic muscles containing a mixture of both fast and slow fibers, become specialized into predominantly fast, or exclusively slow, muscles. Although this process has been described using histochemical methods, we lack an understanding of the shifts in gene expression that take place. In this study, we used s...
